An extremely rare pseudo-autonomous issue from Palmyra
Lot 2203
PALMYRENE. Palmyra (?). Pseudo-autonomous issue, circa 2nd-early 3rd centuries AD. AE (Bronze, 10 mm, 0.65 g, 10 h). Draped bust of Athena or Roma to right, wearing crested helmet. Rev. Ram leaping left, head to right and raising right forepaw; to upper right, crescent to left. Lindgren I -. Lindgren III -. Cf. Naumann E-Auction 107 (2021), 1275 (similar obverse, but differing reverse). SNG München -. SNG Righetti -. Extremely rare. Harshly cleaned, otherwise, very fine.

From a European collection, formed before 2005.

The attribution of this coin to Palmyra is based on its style, size, and fabric, as well as on the Naumann piece, which couples the Athena/Roma obverse with a reverse known from other issues from Palmyra.
